BT secures £28m Cheshire broadband rollout

BT has won yet another broadband contract as part of the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funding process, this time in Cheshire, where it will offer speeds of up to 330Mbit/s to homes and businesses in the region.
The £28.45m project will see BT stump up £9m for the project, while BDUK will contribute £4m. A further £13,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].6m will come form the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The remaining £1.85m will come from the Connecting Cheshire Partnership.
The rollout will see 96 percent of homes and businesses in the region equipped with access to BT’s Openreach network so they can access a guaranteed 2Mbit/s service by 2016. But most locations will be much higher than this, with BT estimating that at least 400,000 premises will be on its fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) services that go as high as 80Mbit/s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Some locations will be on BT’s fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology that can offer speeds of 330Mbit/s as part of a push to help businesses in the area benefit from access to superfast services.
“The four councils across Cheshire are committed to providing reliable high-speed fibre broadband for both our home and business users,” said councillor David Brown on behalf of the Connecting Cheshire Partnership.
“From children doing homework to caring for our elderly population and from social media, to e-commerce and home entertainment – fast broadband is the critical enabler.”
Chancellor and MP for the area George Osborne welcomed the announcement of the deal as a great boost for the region.
“Extending the reach of fibre broadband is a real opportunity to provide a huge strategic boost to our urban and rural areas, for both homes and businesses to become better connected.”
The deal is one of many won by BT in recent months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Last week it confirmed a deal worth £24m with County Durham and has also secured deals in Wales and Northumberland.
