Actor draws on his life on streets
Actor draws on his life on streets
Glenn Gannon (59) from Dolphin's Barn, Dublin lived on the city streets for three years before rehab at Cuan Mhuire changed his life and he was introduced to acting.
He says playing the title role of Danny was like dejavu,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as he revisited all the emotional and physical pain that comes with homelessness.
"I'm not ashamed of it; it made me who I am. I spent those three years in the university of life. It allowed me to evaluate my mistakes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], think about how to combat them and how I could live a life of relative happiness.
Glenn has now finished his book Miracle Man, the title of which he says borrows from the Bible and is not a reference to himself.
He is committed to helping homeless people in Dublin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he says he felt impassioned about playing the lead role in the film.
"I've lost a lot of friends in the last two years who've died in laneways and I kept them in mind while I was playing this part. I'm 11 years with the Simon Community now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I'm trying to change people's perception of homeless people.
"People always ask me how do I know which person to give money to and which not to. And I always say to them, look down at their feet, and if they've got Nike Air they don't need the money.
"The person with the backpack and all their life's possessions, and with rags, and with the soullessness in their eyes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], those people will know it."
He added: "The hardest part for me was from about 3am in the morning when you can't sleep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you'd get cramps and seizures if you'd no drink.
