KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Royals pitcher James Shields joined up with Kansas basketball coach Bill Self on Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium to film a public service announcement to promote foster families.

Shields has been working with foster organizations ever since he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Self serves on the board of KVA Health Systems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a nonprofit that provides health care,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], social services and education to children and families.

Both of them spent time signing autographs and taking pitchers with about a dozen kids before the Royals were scheduled to play the Cleveland Indians in the second of their three-game series,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Shields said of the kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "A lot of the memories they have aren't very good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so if we can create some good ones, that's all that really matters."
