Did A Slave Grow Your Tomato
We made this short film in Immokalee Florida (where 1/3 of the tomatoes in our grocery stores are grown). We spent a day with Lupe Gonzalo, a tomato picker and organizer for CIW (Coalition of Immokalee Workers). The Coalition is fighting to change the way our country's tomato laborers are treated, they've largely ended the slavery conditions that existed in Florida up until recently and are working on raising laborer's wages by implementing a 1 penny per pound increase of picked tomatoes. Many companies (McDonalds) are working with CIW,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but some are holding out (Publix, Chipotle). Please watch and share this short film about Lupe's life. Cheap food is not really cheap.

I'm amazed that underground mining hasn't been turned over to machines. Miners' lives must be cheaper.
Slavery is usually defined along the lines of forced or coerced labor and control over someone's decisions outside of the work place,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not about not getting paid.
I'm pretty sure that this is not slavery, and I study slavery. The video is about sympathy, not about informing, so they didn't focus on any real issues,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], except being poor. (This real issue is why can't these people make a living in their home country? People who legally come here from poor countries pretty much abandon it, rarely helping to build their home economies.)
