Tests reveal more widespread groundwater contamination
The tests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], commissioned by The Advertiser, found levels of arsenic in bore water at Morphettville Racecourse, at a level higher than that recorded at a test site just metres from the former industrial site linked to the contamination.
The Advertisercommissioned tests reveal a cocktail of toxic chemicals and heavy metals has infiltrated groundwater throughout much of Edwardstown including the water of one resident who was told by EPA officers last week that it was unlikely groundwater at their property was affected by the contamination.
Bore water at the Woodlands Tce property shows traces of arsenic equal to those found at an EPA groundwater test site that has been tested over the past 18 months the results from which led to last week's public health warning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The tests at Woodlands Tce and the racecourse where water from a preWWII bore known as Flat Bore and not the deep aquifer was tested also showed traces of chromium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The heavy metal was found in the residential bore at levels more than twice as high as in the EPA's test sites near the former Hills Industry site.
The EPA last week advised Edwardstown and South Plympton residents that residues of fuels and industrial solvents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the carcinogen vinyl chloride and suspected carcinogens, had been detected in groundwater at levels above Australian drinkingwater guidelines.
The groundwater tests commissioned by The Advertiser directed by scientists from the University of SAbased CRC for Contamination Assessment Remediation of the Environment operation were conducted on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Marion Council declined an offer to have its bore at Edwardstown oval tested,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding that it had only ceased using the bore as a precaution and was conducting its own tests. The Education Department likewise refused The Advertiser access to a bore at Forbes Primary School that has been closed.
